Siding has to survive three separate Kansas problems: hail impact, thermal movement across a 120-degree annual temperature range, and sustained wind. Materials that do well in milder climates routinely disappoint here, so it is worth understanding what each option actually does.
Fiber cement (James Hardie and similar)
Fiber cement is the strongest all-round performer for this climate. It does not melt, it holds paint for fifteen years or more, it is dimensionally stable through temperature swings, and it resists hail far better than standard vinyl. It costs more up front and it must be installed correctly — proper gapping, flashing, and fastener placement — but on a Kansas exterior it earns the premium.
Premium insulated vinyl
Modern insulated vinyl is a different product from the thin panels that gave vinyl its reputation. The foam backing adds rigidity and impact resistance, improves the wall's R-value, and stops the hollow rattle in wind. It is the best value option for most homes, provided you buy a genuinely thick panel rather than builder-grade.
Engineered wood
Engineered wood gives you a real wood texture with much better moisture stability than natural cedar. It handles impact well and takes paint beautifully. It does require the cut edges to be sealed properly, which is a workmanship issue more than a product issue.
Standard vinyl and aluminum
Thin vinyl becomes brittle in cold and cracks under hail. Aluminum dents permanently and every dent is visible. Both are cheap for a reason, and in a hail corridor they usually cost more over a fifteen-year window than the better options do.
The part that matters more than the material
Almost every siding failure we are called out to inspect is a water-management failure, not a material failure — house wrap that was never taped, windows that were never flashed, or trim that was caulked instead of detailed. The best siding on the market will not save a wall that water can get behind. Ask any contractor how they handle the weather barrier and the window flashing before you ask about colors.
